Wilbur loses the tension and claustrophobia of the originals with a rambling pace and handsome but airy photography, more appropriate to an episode of Perry Mason. A self-admitted alcoholic (as indicated in a 1974 radio interview for the BBC), Haley fought a battle with liquor well into the 1970s. Nonetheless, he and his band continued to be a popular touring act, enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1960s with the Rock and Roll Revival movement and the signing of a lucrative record deal with the European Sonet Records label. After performing for Queen Elizabeth II at a command performance in 1979, Haley made his final performances in South Africa in May and June 1980. Prior to the South African tour, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and a planned tour of Germany in the fall of 1980 was canceled. Despite his ill health, Haley began compiling notes for possible use as a basis for either a biographical film based on his life, or a published autobiography (accounts differ), and there were plans for him to record an album in Memphis, Tennessee, when the brain tumor began affecting his behavior and he retired to his home in Harlingen, Texas where he died early on the morning February 9, 1981.

Media reports immediately following his death indicated Haley displayed deranged and erratic behavior in his final weeks, although beyond a biography of Haley by John Swenson released a year later which describes Haley painting the windows of his home black and making rambling late-night phone calls to friends and relatives, there is little information extant about Haley's final days. The exact cause of his death is controversial. Media reports, supported by Haley's death certificate (reproduced in the book Bill Haley: The Daddy of Rock and Roll by John Swenson), suggest he died of "natural causes most likely heart attack". Members of Haley's family, however, contest that he died from the brain tumor. Haley was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Songwriters Tom Russell and Dave Alvin addressed Haley's sad demise in musical terms with "Haley's Comet" on Alvin's 1991 album "Blue Blvd." Dwight Yoakam sang backup on the tribute.

Haley's original Comets from 1954 and 1955 still tour the world to packed houses. Despite ranging in age from 72 to 84, the band shows no sign of slowing down, releasing a concert DVD in 2004 on Hydra Records, playing the trendy Viper Room in West Hollywood in 2005, and performing at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater in Branson, Missouri in 2006-07. In March 2007 The Original Comets pre opened the Bill-Haley-Museum in Munich Germany (Schleissheimerstr.321,München www.rockithydra.de). He lived in the mountains so he could hear the show from Fresno. He calls me up one night at the studio and asks if he can spend spring break at my apartment. I agree. He soon pisses off my roommates (Richard Mann and Terry True), so I arrange for Johnny Heathen to take care of him. They form Kondom-Nation (along with Dave K. and Tony Pearson). I pushed Steve around years later right in front of my coffee house (Beat's Me). We made-up and I let him in free to see Circus Bogus on the last night the coffee house was open for business.

I fully agree Mike. I for one would be there but I'm throwing my daughter a 13th birthday party.
The heat does tend to mess things up BUT hopefully Fresno can see past that.
Its true that Fresno has some incredibly talented musicians and the fact that they are being showcased at Saturday's venue is great.
It reminds me of the days when the battle of the bands was held in the parking lot behind the Tower Theatre. On that black asphalt it was hotter than hell but the mosh pit for Circus Bogus didnt seem to mind.....oops! did i just date myself?

My old Band was called The Electric Sex Hens. Later they became Circus Bogus and recorded a couple of tracks on an actual CD that I wrote and helped create. Our lead performer-(singer) wore a furry chicken head mask no shirt, tighty whiteys and a strap on dildo that we rigged with a tube that went into the mask so that he could expel liquids into the audience. This was my idea, as well as the giant paper mache phalus' with wipped cream canisters inside them. They were so glittery and pretty, you should have seen them.
Anyway, we were opening for a more widely known band that is now known and still records. The lead vocalist for this band was a dark haired woman who usually wore all black with an Ankh necklace.
I dressed up as the other band's lead vocalist (Drag:long black wig,big tin foil ankh, her tights and skirt) and pretended to be jamming with the hens (TESH) as we had rehearsed one of their songs to perform.
Our lead chicken then went crazy and pretended to accost me and throw me in a small coffin and carry me outside.
I never got a copy of Circus Bogus' CD and have yet to find one as it has been out of print since the early 90's.
The second time I performed in drag I almost got beat up by rednecks, but I'll save that story.

Yeah, and I know it isn't about me. It's about navigating ourself to a center that is alligned with true spirit our hearts and lastly our minds that may easily mislead us to where our insane Ego's would like to distract us.

Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.

"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived.

"The Golden Girls," featuring four female retirees sharing a house in Miami, grew out of NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff's belief that television was ignoring its older viewers.

Three of its stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in "Maude," Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Rue McClanahan in "Mama's Family." The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character.

Jesus was betrayed to the authorities by one of his twelve closest followers. In Western culture, the betrayer's name, Judas, has become synonymous with supreme and unforgivable disloyalty. Thus when New Mexico's governor, Bill Richardson, a former cabinet officer in the Clinton administration, endorsed Senator Barack Obama, not Senator Hillary Clinton, for president, Clinton loyalist James Carville said, "Mr. Richardson's endorsement came right around the day [in Easter week] when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic."

Calling a betrayer Judas not only insults the target for his disloyalty, but it also implies that the betrayed person is a righteous or Jesus-like person. Mr. Carville implied as much about Senator Clinton. Another implication is that the betrayer had better watch out: He faces a horrible end.

Acts 1 tells how Judas used the reward money -- the famous 30 pieces of silver -- to buy land. "There he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out" (Acts 1:18).

Judas's betrayal of Jesus created a vacancy in the ranks of the apostles. Acts 1 tells how it was filled with a man named Matthias, who was chosen by lot.

Casting lots must have been something like throwing dice. To the modern sensibility, the outcome might seem random or, at best, guided by probability. To the sensibility of a believer, however, God -- the omnipotent or all-powerful ruler of the universe -- determined the outcome. The group prayed before casting lots: "Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry . . ." (Acts 1:24).

One basis for Christian opposition to recreational gambling or gambling as a business is that it is seen as toying with that which is the prerogative of God.

Acts 1 also signals the emergence of an apostle named Peter as the leader of the group. Jesus had earlier picked him for the role, by blessing him, by renaming him as Peter (which means rock) rather than Simon, then by declaring: "[A]nd on this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18).

Judas Iscariot (died April AD 29–33, Hebrew: יהודה איש־קריות‎ Yəhûḏāh ʾÎš-qəriyyôṯ) was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus. Among the twelve, he was apparently designated to keep account of the "money bag" (Grk. γλωσσόκομον),[1] but he is most traditionally known for his role in Jesus' betrayal into the hands of Roman authorities.[2]

His name is also associated with a Gnostic gospel, the Gospel of Judas, that exists in an early fourth century Coptic text. Judas has been a figure of great interest to esoteric groups, such as many Gnostic sects, and has also been the subject of many philosophical writings.

Mrs Samuel Edward Parrish (Lucinda Davis Temple), 60, was born in Lexington, Kentucky on 16 July 1852 the daughter of William Temple and Margaret Eliot. 1

A resident at the time of Woodford County, Kentucky 4, she boarded the Titanic at Southampton as a second class passenger together with Imanita Shelley of Deer Lodge, Montana (ticket number 230433, £26). 5

According to Imanita's affidavit to the United States Senate of 15 May 1912 an "Italian" (? Gus Cohen) jumped into their boat (lifeboat 12), when it was being lowered. He bruised Lutie's side and leg. 6/7

After surviving the Titanic, the Parrish family lived in Missouri for a while and after World War I relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii. The women continued to roam the world seemingly unaffected by their experience on the Titanic 8 and the 1920 census of Hawaii shows Sam Parrish and William Shelley living together without any other family members. Lutie left Hawaii in 1927 on a world tour and was gone for many months but returned before her death.

On 31 July 1930 she suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage at her home in Haole, Ewa, Hawaii and lingered about a week, dying at 5:00 P.M. on 7 August 1930. Her death certificate lists her as "Lucy Parrish" and gives an erroneous date and place of birth. 9 She was buried in a solitary grave in the Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu. Afterwards the rest of the family left Hawaii and so Lutie's body is the only one buried there.

Imanita apparently continued to move around the country, living at various times in Montana, Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon, California, Washington, and Hawaii

It occurred to me that, up until now, I've been almost completely ignoring a VERY important part of the whole Hickerson equation, and that is of his collaborators.

You see, Buddy has a network of friends and nere-do-wells on whom he quite often depends for emergency Quigman gags. Until now, I have only noted these collaborative efforts when the gag had been used before, but not anymore. From here on, this page will be devoted to new Quigman gags written (or drawn) by anyone other than dear, old Buddy. The perpetrator's, I mean, the collaborator's name is added parenthetically after the gag.

I can only imagine that the moment any of his little helpers wise up and show Buddy the door he'll just as quickly re-run the gag minus their accreditation. Time will tell.

By the way, this is by no means a complete list. I only started taking more complete note of the gag-writer's names in 2004. Who knew he'd make a habit of it?

Leon Spinks (born July 11, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri) is a former boxer. He had an overall record of 26 wins, 17 losses and 3 draws as a professional, with 14 knockout wins. While still an amateur, he also became a member of the United States Marine Corps. Spinks went from being heavyweight champion of the world to being homeless in little more than a decade.[citation needed]

He won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, alongside brother Michael Spinks, who also won a gold medal in those games. Two years earlier, at the inaugural 1974 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Havana, Cuba, he captured the bronze medal.

MANATEE COUNTY - Prosecutors are moving ahead with a case against one of two 93-year-old men picked up during undercover prostitution stings.

In the case of Frank Milio, prosecutors have issued subpoenas and plan to take him to trial in April.

Milio, according to police records, tried to pay $20 in November to an undercover officer on 14th Street West.

Milio recently told the Herald-Tribune he was only flirting with the woman.

"I haven't had that in years," he said. "Ninety-three is kind of old."

Carlos Underhill, 93, will not be charged, although he does not deny stopping to chat with the "good-looking girl" who made eyes at him and turned out to be an undercover officer.

Police say Underhill was willing to pay $30 for sex and that he promised to come back a few hours later to consummate the deal.

Prosecutors say that they cannot move ahead with the criminal case because there is no way to prove Underhill planned to come back.

Underhill was fined $150 for trying to pick up a prostitute in 1990, when he was 75. In the latest case, he says, he was not cruising Tamiami Trail for sex: He just wanted to chat with the buxom woman who smiled at him as he drove past.

"All I was going to do was talk," he said Monday. "It wasn't for sex. I am 93, you know."

Rock stars, in general, lead colourful lives, and Gene Simmons, flamboyant founder member of American rockers Kiss, is no exception if his autobiography is anything to go by.

What makes Kiss And Make-Up particularly fascinating, however, is the contrast between Simmons the rock star - famous for outlandish stage make-up, costumes and close encounters with female fans (he claims in the book to have had around 4600 'liaisons' with the opposite sex) - and Simmons the Yeshiva-educated kid, born plain old Chaim Witz in Israel in 1949.

Simmons spares no detail in describing his early, pre-Kiss, life, moving from Israel to New York with his over-protective Hungarian mother, a concentration camp victim, when he was eight, and discovering such modern inventions as television, refrigerators and even Santa Claus, whom he assumed was a rabbi after seeing him on a billboard ("I figured he must have been a Russian rabbi because of all the snow in the background."). He had a gruelling Yeshiva education in the New York suburb of Williamsburg, which began at 7 am and often went on until 9.30 in the evening - but he discovered music, the ultimate influence in his life, after seeing The Beatles' legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.

Kiss's rise to fame is chronicled in equally entertaining fashion - fluctuating record sales, live shows, his relationship with fellow band members (including Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley) and the people behind the scenes all get their fair share of coverage, but the book is at its liveliest when describing Simmons experiences with groupies - although he has avoided the drugs and alcohol which have been the downfall of many rock stars, he clearly made up for this with his encounters with the opposite sex (including his romance with Cher). The 80s saw a string of acting roles for Simmons and the launch of the now-defunct Simmons Records, while he also met Shannon Tweed, the actress who would later become the mother of his two children Nicholas and Sophie.

It's obvious from reading Kiss And Make-Up that Simmons is immensely proud of his Jewish roots and has fond memories of his early life in both Israel and New York. Not only that, but the book makes for hugely enjoyable reading, largely because of his entertaining writing style - not only does he pack in anecdotes by the ton, but he also allows his enigmatic personality to shine through.

A bunch of previously unseen photos from Simmons' personal collection also adds to the fun - shots of him as a child in Israel, vintage snaps of the band in concert and putting on their trademark facepaint, shots of Simmons' children and one particularly fascinating snap, in which Simmons, while out with Cher, is attempting to cover his face so that he wouldn't be photographed without his make-up. Whatever your opinion may be of Kiss' music, this is a must-read.
